Former president Mwai Kibaki’s nephew Ndiritu Muriithi has dealt a shocking blow to the incumbent Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu.

According to the latest results, Muriithi is poised to become the new area Governor after garnering 50.51 per cent of all gubernatorial votes cast against Irungu’s 49.4 per cent.

As at 6.15, Muriithi had managed to get 98,843 of all votes compared to Irungu’s 96,828 votes.

Strikingly, Muriithi was contesting as an independent candidate while Irungu was representing the Jubilee Party.

During the nominations, the Jubilee Party had declared Muriithi as it winner. However, Irungu made a successful petition to the political parties disputes tribunal and later went to court, both of which ordered that he be given the nomination certificate.
