Nakumatt Supermarkets’employees on Tuesday took to the streets to protest over unpaid salaries.

This is the latest nail in the coffin of a once blossoming retailer.

The employees demonstrated along Mombasa Road heading to the retailer’s head office.

Reports indicate that the employees have not been paid their June and July salaries.

Earlier on, Nakumatt had stated that it would pay its employees in phases as a cash crisis at the retailer deepens. “The company has reviewed salary payment plans with an intention of ensuring that every employee gets a percentage of his/her salary every for a total of three weeks in a month,” Nakumatt said in a memo.

Nakumatt has also been accused of failing to remit statutory deductions to the NHIF and NSSF for its employees.

Last month, it was revealed that the retaier has debts amounting to over Sh. 30 billion.
