Lonely Planet has released its Best In Travel 2024, where travel experts name the best tourist destinations, including the top ten countries, regions, and cities to visit next year.

Nairobi was crowned as the world’s best city to visit according to a guidebook by the leading travel organisation.

Paris, the capital of France, comes second while Montreal in Canada takes third position in the ranking which also names the best countries and regions to visit in 2024.

According to Lonely Planet, the Kenyan capital offers a dynamic array of restaurants, food carts, and cafes, along with a “steady rotation of arts and cultural venues that all fuel a distinct Nairobi cool.”

“The sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of Nairobi are a complete sensory experience. The elaborately decorated Matatu buses painted with ornamental graffiti, the dynamic assortment of restaurants, carts, and cafes, and the constant rotation of art and cultural venues fuel a distinct freshness found only in Kenya’s capital. Add to this the eponymous national park, rich in wildlife and easily accessible from the city centre, and you have an unforgettable trip,” adds the guide on its website.

Lonely Planet says that silver medal winner Paris is offering visitors new ways to interact with the city as it prepares to host the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Third-place Montreal is praised for its ‘changing neighbourhoods packed with diverse cuisine, au courant galleries and quirky shops’ while Mostar in Bosnia, which ranks fourth, is said to have an ‘unforgettably scenic, minaret-dotted medieval Old Town.”

Fifty destinations made the annual “Best in Travel” list of trending destinations for the coming year across five categories – sustainable, value, cities, countries, and regions – to mark the travel publisher’s 50th anniversary.

‘With new takes on iconic destinations and 50 fresh ideas across five categories, we’re confident Best in Travel opens up a year of incredible adventures,” said executive editor Nitya Chambers.

Lonely Planet’s newly released Best In Travel 2024 book crowns the top ten countries, regions, and cities to visit next year. Two new categories – ‘value’ and ‘sustainable’ – have also been introduced this year to mark Lonely Planet’s 50th birthday.
