Mouth-watering amount of Money Leopards, Gor and FKF will receive if Azam TV broadcast Upcoming Mashemeji derby

A broadcast rights deal between Azam TV and Football Kenya Federation Premier League clubs is on the verge of collapse due to a delay in correspondence.

The Tanzanian-based media firm wrote to FKF on April 25, 2023, seeking to broadcast two league matches worth Sh8.2 million.

In the letter, Azam Media offered that all 18 clubs would receive Sh7.3 million to divide equally among themselves, with FKF receiving Sh818,000 from the deal.

The response was expected before the end of April, but there hasn’t been any, leaving the deal in limbo.

The FKF Premier League currently doesn’t have a sponsor following the withdrawal of both StarTimes as the broadcast rights holder and BetKing as the league title sponsor in 2020.

The four-match deal by Azam comes amid financial struggles by several FKF Premier League clubs.

Azam TV is also the sponsor of Tanzanian side AZAM football club and has a separate broadcast rights deal with the Tanzania Premier League worth Sh200 million a season.

The delay in correspondence between Azam and FKF could affect the league’s financial situation and the clubs’ ability to operate.

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will be playing against each other in the Mashemeji Derby on May 15, 2023, with Gor Mahia aiming to reclaim the league title it has lost to Tusker in the past two seasons.

K’Ogalo will also clash with Tusker on May 23, 2023, in matches that could have a bearing on the FKF-PL title.
