NAIROBI, Kenya, May 19 – Starting this season, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a 40pc increase in its prize money structures meaning more cash for clubs who qualify for the group stages of the Champions League and Confederation Cup.
Teams that qualify for the group stages of the Champions League are guaranteed at least 700,000 USD, equivalent to approximately Sh96.4mn. This is the amount teams that finish in third and fourth and fail to make it to the quarters will earn.
Teams that progress to the quarter finals will be guaranteed USD900,000, equivalent to Sh123.9mn.
Those that make the semis will each bank a whooping USD1.2mn, equivalent to Sh156.2mn.
The winners of the title are guaranteed a prize money of USD4mn, equivalent to Sh550mn while the losing finalist will bank USD2mn, equivalent to Sh275.3mn.
In the Confederation Cup, teams that make the group stages are guaranteed USD400,000 (Sh55.1mn). This is the money paid out to the third and fourth place finishers.
Those who make the quarter finals, the first and second in the group, earn USD550,000 (Sh75.8mn) while the semi-finalists each earn USD750,000 (Sh103.2mn).
The winner of the title will walk home with USD2mn (Sh275.3mn) while the losing finalist gets a consolation of USD1mn (Sh137.7mn).
This means that this year, Tanzania’s Yanga, who have made their first ever final in the CAF Confederation Cup, are guaranteed at least Sh137.7mn.
Kenyan clubs have struggled to make an imprint in Continental football and the last team to make the group stages was Gor Mahia in 2018, when they played in the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup.
This year, no Kenyan club has participated in CAF Competitions due to the hitherto FIFA suspension.
In the 2021-22 season, both Gor Mahia and Tusker FC were eliminated in the play-off round of the Confederation Cup, just one step away from the lucrative group stages.
