MC Gogo: How MC Rose From Doing Free Gigs to Charge Thousands for Hosting Events

MC Gogo was born and raised in Dandora, located in Nairobi County.

In a past interview, the entertainer revealed that he had never envisioned a future as an MC during his childhood.

His journey into emceeing began unexpectedly when he was asked to take over the hosting duties for a church event after the original MC fell ill.

MC Gogo shared that he found great enjoyment in performing at that event.

“The event was truly successful, and from that moment, I developed a passion for the microphone and saw it as a viable pursuit,” he remarked.

MC Gogo further mentioned that it did not take long for him to actively seek out emceeing opportunities on his own.

“I began searching for events in my local area and collaborated with community-based organizations, even if they did not offer payment, as it provided me with valuable exposure,” he explained.

However, when the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Kenya and subsequent safety measures were implemented, it resulted in a significant halt to MC Gogo’s business activities.

Consequently, he convened with two of his DJ colleagues to brainstorm strategies for overcoming the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic while still generating income.

The trio then approached a mutual acquaintance affiliated with a local organization to present their concept.

“We aimed to conduct live shows on Facebook and required a venue for recording. He suggested we give it a try on Friday. When we did, the response was remarkable. That marked the beginning of our shows,” he recounted.

Around the same period, MC Gogo contemplated creating a TikTok account, despite having previously vowed against it.

“I had promised myself I would never join TikTok, as I perceived it to be an app primarily for women. However, one day, someone sent me a teaser of a mix we had created, claiming to have found it on TikTok

“It seemed someone had taken it from my Instagram and shared it there. This prompted me to join and explore the platform,” he explained.

In the process of creating content for TikTok, MC Gogo would listen to recordings of his live performances and select a brief segment to share online.

His inaugural video on the platform achieved viral status, propelling him to immediate fame.

“I checked my phone, and it was inundated with notifications. Upon reviewing the video, I noticed it had garnered over 20,000 views within an hour and a half. Within two hours, the view count had escalated to 150,000

“By the end of the day, the video reached 500,000 views, and eventually, it surpassed 1 million views. That was the moment I began to engage with TikTok more frequently,” he remarked.

MC Gogo also began collaborating with other DJs as a guest performer, leading to recommendations for emceeing opportunities.

He mentioned that his parents are supportive of his career choice.

“My mother recognizes that this is a profession; personally, I abstain from alcohol. I simply create the atmosphere and return home. It is just a job like any other,” he clarified.

Additionally, MC Gogo revealed his strong Christian faith, emphasizing that he never misses church.

“Even if I have a show on Saturday, regardless of its location outside Nairobi, I am in church on Sunday. I also ensure I never miss my classes. I recall a time when my DJ friends found me studying in a club and laughed heartily. I was reviewing my PDF notes in preparation for an exam the next day,” he shared.

MC Gogo charges between Ksh 30,000 and Ksh 100,000 for his services.
