The global athletic community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Charles Kipsang, a  Kenyan athlete, who collapsed and died after completing the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope in Buea, Cameroon, on Saturday, February 24.

Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai of the South West Region confirmed the devastating news, revealing that Kipsang had valiantly completed the arduous race despite feeling unwell towards the end.

Despite his discomfort, Kipsang exhibited extraordinary determination, refusing to enter an ambulance and opting to continue after consuming some soda to alleviate his symptoms.

However, tragedy struck as Kipsang’s condition rapidly deteriorated upon being called up to the podium to receive his award at the stadium.

He collapsed and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the local hospital.

Kipsang’s passing has left a profound void in the athletics community, with Governor Bilai expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a promising athlete who was on the cusp of making history as the first Kenyan to win the prestigious race.

Kipsang’s dominance throughout the competition was evident as he emerged as the first among over 550 participants to reach the summit of the formidable 4,095-meter mountain.

His exceptional performance held the lead for an impressive four hours and twenty minutes.

In the wake of this tragedy, Athletics Kenya has extended its heartfelt condolences to Kipsang’s family and friends, emphasizing their commitment to supporting them during this difficult time.

They have also initiated communication with Cameroonian authorities to address the circumstances surrounding Kipsang’s passing.
