KRA Begins Mass Auction of Cars at Mombasa Port, How to Bid

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has kicked off a week-long online auction to get rid of goods, including cars, that have overstayed at the Port of Mombasa.

In a statement, the authority announced that the exercise which started on Monday, August 14, will run till Sunday, August 20.

In total, 56 cars have been put up for sale with the cheapest, a used Hyundai, listed for a reserve price of Ksh232,000 while the most expensive, a Toyota Hilux Vigo, was listed for a reserve price of Ksh1.5 million.

Other goods up for sale include bibles, listed at Ksh3,000, a coloured TV worth Ksh10,000, 1,400 bags of gypsum powder at Ksh450,000 and assorted furniture as well as clothing and a treadmill at Ksh550,000.

A metallic black boxwas listed for Ksh3,000, a used excavator at Ksh3 million, six heavy duty tyres at Ksh1.5 million as well as bicycles, toys and assorted home appliances all valued at Ksh700,000.

In an earlier notice, KRA advised interested participants that whereas the bidding process was to be carried out online, the goods will be available for site viewing between Monday, August 14, and Friday, August 18 between 8:00am and 5:00pm.

How to Bid

KRA directed interested bidders to access the items through its portal, customsauction.kra.go.ke/products.

The interested applicants will be expected to key in their KRA iTax PIN and iTax Password before they are allowed to place bids for individual products.

According to the live tracking of the bids on the portal, some goods have attracted a higher bid surpassing their reserve price by as high as Ksh500,000. For instance, one of the goods listed for Ksh3 million has received bids of up to Ksh3.5 million.

The authority, however, did not reveal if the participants were expected to pay a refundable fee before embarking on the auction process.

The auction follows a similar exercise carried out by KRA in December 2022 involving 548 vehicles alongside other items considered surplus and unserviceable.

The exercise was carried out at Kilindini in Mombasa County on December 15, 2022.

Some of the vehicles that will be auctioned include; Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Lexus, Nissan Note, Mazda, Toyota Vitz, Mercedes Benz C and BMW X5.
