In Nairobi, on the digital battlefield, decisions made in a split second and strategic cooperation go beyond the need for spoken language – this aspect was highlighted at the first Kenya “Elephant Cup” Honor of Kings Esports Invitational Tournament, which took place together with the 2026 Nairobi Youth Digital Entertainment Festival.

The event gathered nearly 200 players from almost 40 registered teams and marked a significant point in the rapidly growing gaming scene in Kenya. It was organised by the Kenya Chinese Youth Association and the Kenya Overseas Chinese Association in cooperation with the local grassroots operator Kylin Esports, the aim being to use competitive gaming as a means of promoting cross-cultural exchange, building community, and creating economic opportunities.

The event, which had the theme “Esports Connects the World, Youth Creates the Future”, included intense matches in Honor of Kings, the global mobile multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) developed by Tencent. In addition to the digital competition, young people took part in cosplay events based on Eastern folklore, the local creators taking on the roles of figures such as Wukong and Mulan.

Yang Min, who is president of the Kenya Chinese Youth Association, stressed that esports has now become a common language among young people all over the world, and that through playing Honor of Kings Chinese and Kenyan youth have been able to meet each other in person, build up trust, and lay the foundation for future cooperation in the fields of business and digital entertainment.

Kenya must wake up to the Esports Boom

As stated by Ronny Lusigi, President of the Esports Kenya Federation, more than 11 million young people in Kenya are now involved in gaming, which means that digital entertainment has become one of the most promising areas for youth employment and for international engagement in East Africa.

Mobile esports are unlike traditional PC or console gaming, which demands expensive hardware, since they have made competition accessible all over Africa. In Kenya, as smartphone use continues to increase, high-quality mobile games enable gamers from all different socioeconomic groups to compete at a high level. A competitor from Kenya pointed out that as everybody has a phone in their pocket, anyone can just start up a game and improve their abilities.

Even though parents and critics in the past had a skeptical attitude towards video games, the people involved in the festival stressed that competitive gaming organised in a structured way helps to develop important real-world skills such as fast problem-solving, tactical awareness of one’s surroundings, and the ability to coordinate as a team with multiple people. Moreover, the growing industry goes well beyond that of professional players to include areas such as shoutcasting, tournament management, streaming, software design, and the creation of digital content.

In order to develop this ability, Kylin Esports has set up a special gaming hub in Kilimani, Nairobi. As Collins Oloo, the director, pointed out, these kinds of community-based venues provide local teams—such as the Kenyan Avengers, who have reached the finals of tournaments—with the facilities they need in order to improve their skills and progress from playing amateurnly to pursuing sustainable careers on a global scale.

In order that Kenyan teams may consistently compete against international sides on the global stage, players and members of the industry advocated for focused investments in various key areas such as better access to high-performance equipment, affordable high-speed internet to reduce latency, and more corporate sponsorship and government support.

The organizers of the Kenya Elephant Cup, aiming for the event to become annual, hope to turn Nairobi into a leading regional centre for digital entertainment and to establish esports as a major factor in promoting international friendship, cultural appreciation, and economic development among the country’s digital generation.
