Kakamega Homeboyz set to face Azam FC in friendly match

Mozzart Bet Cup champions Kakamega Homeboyz are likely to travel to Tanzania next week for an international friendly match against Azam Football Club.

The match is aimed at assessing the team’s readiness for the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round against Libya’s Al Hilal Benghazi.

The Patrick Odhiambo-coached side is expected to tackle Uganda’s KCCA on Friday in a friendly match at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo. Abana Abeingo are scheduled to depart Kakamega for Uganda on Thursday morning.

Homeboyz team manager Boniface Imbenzi confirmed their plan to tackle Azam at their backyard days after their return from Uganda.

“We are hoping to face Azam possibly next week in a friendly match. We are awaiting confirmation from the Tanzanian club,” he revealed.

Asked on why they settled on the ice-cream makers, Imbenzi said they had identified the Azam Complex Stadium in Chamazi as their preferred home ground for CAF matches should Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums fail to be approved for the high-profile matches.

Imbenzi said playing Azam in the pre-season will help the playing unit acquaint themselves with the conditions in Tanzania and the artificial playing surface.

“We are not leaving anything to chance even as we wait for favorable outcome on whether Nyayo and Kasarani can host our CAF matches. We want our players to get used to the conditions in Chamazi and playing on the surface,” he clarified.

Meanwhile, Imbenzi confirmed that the club had reunited with central midfielder Francis Omondi after the burly player put pen to paper on Tuesday.

Omondi featured for Homeboyz in the 2021-2022 season before leaving for four-time Kenyan champions Ulinzi Stars whom he served for a season.

“He is back after accepting our offer,” added Imbenzi.

Homeboyz have signed the Ugandan duo of Davies Kasirye and Cleo Ssetuba.

Alex Imbusia was headhunted from the 2009 league winners Sofapaka, with Tanzania U23 international Oscar Adam Paul also signing for the club.
