The legal profession is at a crucial point. It needs thoughtful leadership, strong management, and a renewed focus on the welfare of its members. With over 25 years of legal practice, experience brings not just knowledge but also a duty. This duty involves giving back, mentoring, and shaping the future of the profession through service in institutions like the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

A strong professional body must be based on good management. The Society has made commendable progress in upholding the rule of law, but it must focus more on systems that promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency. Financial integrity is closely connected to this. Like any organization, the LSK needs good financial management to operate effectively. Protecting members’ funds and ensuring careful use of resources is essential. With a solid background in finance and governance, there is a chance to improve oversight of the Secretariat and deliver better value to members.

Another urgent concern is the shrinking space for legal practice. More non-lawyers are taking on work that belongs to trained legal professionals. This trend undermines the profession and needs strategic reflection. Lawyers must defend their practice areas while also diversifying services and finding new ways to practice law in a changing environment.

The wellbeing of advocates is equally important. Many in the profession face mental health challenges and wellness issues, often without anyone knowing. A sustainable legal career requires not only professional success but also mental, emotional, and physical health. Therefore, supporting advocates in a holistic way must be a priority.

With a clear understanding of these challenges, dedicated leadership can drive real reform. By serving with integrity, experience, and commitment, the legal profession can be strengthened for current practitioners and future generations.
