Gender equality wins big as AFC Leopards set to launch women’s football team

AFC Leopards, one of Kenya’s most popular football clubs, is making strides to expand its reach by launching a women’s football team.

With the team’s plans nearing completion, AFC Leopards is now targeting participation in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Premier League.

Launching the women’s football side will make AFC Leopards the first major football club in Kenya to have a women’s team. The move is part of the club’s efforts to promote gender equality and support the development of women’s football in the country.

AFC Leopards’ move to launch a women’s football team comes when women’s football in Kenya is gaining momentum. The establishment of the FKF Women’s Premier League in 2015 has provided a platform for women’s football teams to compete nationally. The league has grown in popularity and now boasts 12 teams.

However, despite the growth of women’s football in the country, women’s teams have continued to face challenges regarding funding, resources, and support from football stakeholders.
