Google launches gemini pro AI plan for Kenyan university students

    Google has officially launched its Gemini Pro Plan (Google AI Pro) in Kenya. This marks a significant step in improving artificial intelligence literacy and digital innovation in higher education. The launch event took place at the Sarova Stanley Hotel in Nairobi and attracted senior government officials, academic leaders, and students.

    At the event, Hon. William Kabogo, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy, praised the initiative as a key part of Kenya’s AI Strategy for 2025–2030. He said, “By providing university and college students with access to Google’s most advanced AI model, we are equipping the next generation with foundational AI skills needed to thrive in the future workforce.”

    Eligible students aged 18 and older can enjoy 12 months of free access to the Gemini Pro Plan. This includes tools like Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, and Deep Research, plus 2TB of Google Drive storage. These resources will help students analyze, research, and create with AI-driven precision, bringing technology and academia closer together.

    Dr. David Watene, Director of University Education and Research, highlighted the need to integrate AI literacy into higher education to create a flexible, industry-ready workforce.

    Benson Kinoti, Google for Education’s Sub-Saharan Africa Lead, reiterated Google’s commitment to enhancing learning through technology. He said, “Our goal is to empower every student with an AI tutor that fosters creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving skills.”

    This initiative aligns closely with Goal 4 of Kenya’s National AI Strategy, which focuses on developing talent. It also shows how public-private partnerships can drive digital change. Student registration for the free Gemini Pro offer ends on December 9, 2025.
