Former Gor Mahia defender Wesley Onguso reveals struggles behind his break from active football

Former Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia right back Wesley Onguso has opened up on his decision to take a break from active football.

The experienced player, who last played for Nairobi City Stars in 2021, cited the financial strain of unpaid wages as the primary reason for his hiatus.

In an interview, Onguso highlighted the financial struggles faced by many players, emphasizing the difficulty of supporting a family without consistent income.

“What made me take a break from playing active football is that you can’t stay for months without pay and you have a family. Imagine coming from training and a kid will ask you ‘Dad what have you brought for me?’,” Wesley Onguso told BetNare TV.

Despite the challenges, the dedicated defender made it clear that he has not retired from the sport that he loves.

“I have not retired, and I am keeping fit with a Division One outfit as I pursue my personal businesses. Additionally, I am still running my foundation where I support the disadvantaged in society,” Onguso reassured his fans and supporters.

Having previously played for renowned Kenyan clubs such as Posta Rangers, Gor Mahia, Sofapaka, Western Stima, and Mathare United, Onguso’s absence from the pitch has left many fans wondering about his future in the sport.

However, the defender’s determination to stay fit and his continued involvement in football through his foundation showcase his enduring passion for the game.

During his time with Nairobi City Stars, Onguso played a pivotal role in the team’s promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2019/20 season.
