Five police officers are feared dead after a gunman attacked Kapenguria Police Station, West Pokot County, on Thursday morning.
The gunman is reported to have invaded station to rescue “colleague” arrested at Nakujit on suspicion of being a terrorist, according to police sources on the ground.

Police have taken cover as shooting continues.

The police station boss (OCS) Vitalis Ochido is said to have been shot but is still alive, the police sources indicated.

National Police Service spokesman George Kinoti confirmed the incident but without giving the details.

Details of the incident remained scanty but Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet confirmed the active shooting, saying more officers had been deployed to subdue the suspect.

“A suspected terror suspect in custody seized a rifle and began shooting,” the IG said. “The station has been surrounded and efforts to subdue him are ongoing.”

He could not immediately confirm reports that some police officers had been killed during the incident.

Police Spokesman Charles Owino told Capital FM News that more information would be provided later.

Elsewhere in Lamu, a terror suspect was killed early Thursday morning during a raid at a police camp.

The attack occurred at Mangai Rapid Deployment Unit Camp where police engaged terrorists in a gunfight, injuring several others.

The exact number of the attackers who raided the camp at 3am remained unknown, but police estimated it at more than 10.

Boinnet said a major security operation was underway, with a back-up team deployed there Thursday morning.

More to follow.
