The Principal Secretary Ministry of Education Belio Kipsang has said the government will give families that lost children in the Kakamega Primary School KSh.100,000 each.
The token, according to Kipsang is the government’s small way of sharing the grief with the distraught families.
“The National Government has been able to assist in a small way to donate families that lost their children in the tragedy, every family will receive KSh 100,000 to support in the burial arrangements,” Kipsang said.
Kipsang spoke while attending a funeral ceremony for 13 of the 14 pupils who died in a stampede at the Kakamega Primary School on Monday.
Citizen Digital understands that one of the students- Nailah Kiverenge-was buried on Wednesday in accordance with the Muslim faith.
On Friday, Leaders and locals thronged the Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega where 13 caskets of the pupils who perished in the tragedy were laid side by side ahead of their final send-off.
A somber mood engulfed the stadium with emotions running high even as leaders asked the government to hasten probe into the matter and ensure the incident does not happen again.
Kakamega Central OCPD David Kabena on Monday told Citizen Digital that the pupils, most of them in Class Five, were leaving their classes heading home when the stampede occurred on a staircase at around 5 pm.
40 other pupils, some of whom are alleged to have jumped off the third floor during the bizarre stampede said to have occurred due to panic, were left nursing injuries.
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha inspected the scene on Tuesday morning and announced that the school would remain closed for one week.
It has since emerged that the school which has a population of 3128 pupils in the lower and upper primary may have been overpopulated.
Parties that have visited the school after the incident say that lack of safety railing on the stairways on the storied classrooms had exposed the kids to untold danger.
