Detectives Recover Sh 17.5 Million Stolen from Nigerian Comedian MR IBU

Police in Nigeria have arrested the son and stepdaughter of popular Nigerian comedian John Okafor, famously known as Mr Ibu, over allegations of stealing money intended for the actor’s medical treatment.

Onyeabuchi Okafo and Jasmine Okekeagwu are accused of “possessing the actor’s phone and tampering with bank details” before embezzling 55 million Naira ($60,700; £47,800).

The funds were part of the contributions made by fans and well-wishers for the actor’s medical expenses after he fell seriously ill last year, leading to the amputation of one of Okafor’s legs.

The Nollywood star also underwent five surgeries, as stated by his family.

Authorities reportedly recovered 50 million Naira (17.5 million Kenyan Shillings) , quoting Mayegun Aminat, a spokesperson for the police’s criminal investigation department.

The two suspects were allegedly planning to flee to the United Kingdom, according to Aminat.

Lagos Court has granted them bail of 15 million Naira each while investigations continue, local media reported.

They are expected to appear in court next month.
