City Stars alleged match-fixers deny charges in Nairobi court

Three individuals, including a Russian national and a Ugandan counterpart, have been charged with match-fixing at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi, Kenya.

The accused, Akhiad Kubeiv, Bernard Nabende, and Martin Munga, were arrested on March 9, 2023, following a joint operation involving the Kenya Police,  and a section of the media houses and footballers and management from Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League side City Stars.

According to the charges, the trio is accused of conspiring with others to commit the felony of cheating by fixing a football game in the Roysambu area within Kasarani sub-county of Nairobi county between February 3 and March 10, 2023.

The players involved were to receive a sum of Kes. 1.8 million ($14,000) if the deal went through, with each player receiving Kes. 30,000 as transport to the venue.

The accused individuals appeared before Principal Magistrate Eric Mûtûnga of Makadara Law Courts on March 13, where they denied the charges.

They were each released on a bond of Sh300,000 with two sureties of a similar amount.
