The late sergeant Kipyegon Kenei had reached out to a colleague through a call before he was murdered.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti told the media on Thursday, February 5, 2020, that Kenei had sought help in crafting a statement about his involvement in the security breach that saw former CS Rashid Echesa enter Harambee House Annex with two foreigners.

Sergeant Kenei was supposed to record a statement with the police but was murdered before he could shed more light on the saga.

The DCI explained that since the officer reached out for help, he could have been willing to collaborate and the murder could have been executed to compromise the investigations.

“The deceased on February 19, 2020, called a close friend a colleague and inquired to be guided on how to record a statement which implied that the late officer was ready to record a statement on the 19th,” Kinoti told journalists.

The DCI also questioned why Kenei’s supervisors did not show concern when he failed to report for work.

“Since he failed to appear at his place of work on February 19, his superiors did not endeavor to find out where he was and neither did they visit his residence to enquire on his whereabouts,” Kinoti told journalists.

He also noted inconsistencies in letters from Ruto’s office, one sent to Police IG Hillary Mutyambai and the other to his office.

Ruto’s office wrote the first letter to the DCI, detailing 10 aspects they wanted to be investigated.

The second letter was sent to the IG urging him to expedite investigations, arrest and arraign suspects in court.

Both pieces of communication bore different letterheads, the DCI noted.
