Going by the famous Gary Ballinger quote ‘the more personal, the more universal,’ award-winning Kenyan actress Brenda Wairimu has managed to win the hearts of many and put her name on the film map merely by using her personal life experiences and circumstance as motivation.
Opening up on her Instagram page, Brenda, who wrote an appreciation post after her win as the best actress at the LIPFF 2019 and the WFA 2020 explained that she owed her acting success to the most difficult times she had to go through, including her parents’ passing.
“You know how they say artists perform their best when they are at their worst? These trophies mean a lot to me, it’s taken almost a decade to get here…and it’s true when my personal life was at its worst, my art thrived, it was/is my escape. I lost my dad when we began the shooting of Kona, my mom after that,” she wrote.

The mother of one also touched on her failed relationship with musician Juliani, stating that while they were shooting the famous Subira, her relationship was on the rocks but she chose to focus on her acting regardless.
“During Disconnect and especially Subira, my relationship was taking blow after blow, and a lot of misinformation was going round about it. It was a blessing to be able to be someone else, whose life was laid down as words on a script, whose outcome was certain.”
With her relationship, however, Brenda and Juliani have managed to keep it cordial for the sake of their daughter.
Speaking during a previous interview, Juliani wished Brenda well as he commended her for being an amazing mother to their daughter.
“We haven’t been together for almost two years, with Brenda. She is a great mother, she is a good human being and she has been helpful, helping me raise my child, understanding. So as a person namwombea mema. Naomba God afungue njia yake in all the things she is planning to do,” he said.
Acting success
In a separate post, the actress congratulated the entire Subira team for winning Best Indigenous Film Swahili at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) 2020 held at Eko Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.
Also taking a trophy home was Brenda Wairimu’s acting counterpart, Pascal Tokodi who won the best supporting actor for his role in the movie Disconnect beating other renowned actors who were nominated in the same category namely; Ramsey Noah (Living in bondage), Richard Mofe Damoijo (Seven), Nkem Owoh (God calling) and Remilekun ‘Safaru’ (King of Boys).
