K24 reporter Anjlee Gadhvi has succumbed to liver cancer just weeks after she celebrated her Christmas holiday with her mother and two children.

According to Anjlee, her mum’s presence was a gift she could never buy as she has taken a break from work after 20 years.

‘SO HAPPY HERE, MY MUM JOINED ME ON VACATION. SHE MANAGED TO TAKE A BREAK AFTER 20 SO YEARS AND MAKE IT TO MOMBASA!

SHE COULDN’T RECOGNIZE COUNTY 001 BUT RECALLED SO MANY OF CHILDHOOD MEMORIES… TO FEEL THE INDIAN OCEAN, HER BREEZE, HER SAND IS HEALING AND REJUVENATING ON IT’S OWN!.

Adding,

BUT MAKING MEMORIES WITH HER GRANDCHILDREN AND ME…CANNOT BE DESCRIBED.

IT GAVE ME A SENSE OF SATISFACTION..

I JUST HOPE I MAKE IT THROUGH AND MAKE MANY MORE MEMORIES! HAPPY HOLIDAYS LOVELY PEOPLE!’

Anjlee had posted about how she had been under the weather a few months ago. Stating that she was learning the art of letting go.

‘HAVE BEEN UNDER THE WEATHER FOR A WHILE. COPING WITH THE IDEA OF LETTING GO AND HAVING LESS EXPECTATIONS.

CAME ACROSS THESE PICS TAKEN BY THE AMAZING @KADOGOIAN AND @WINNIE.ODANDE AS I PLAYED DRESS UP WHILE WE WERE SHOOTING FOR THE #CANCERLIE FEATURE EARLIER THIS YEAR. HOPING AND PRAYING 2020 BRINGS RENEWED HOPE.’

Video of K24 reporter telling her 5-year-old she has cancer

One of the last videos that Anjlee Gadhvi shot and posted on social media gives us a glimpse into what her life was like.

The K24 news anchor told her daughter she was going abroad for cancer treatment, their interaction left her many in tears.

Sharing the video on her Twitter, back in August 12, 2019 Anjlee penned,

‘I DON’T KNOW WHETHER I SHOULD BE SHARING THIS CLIP OR NOT. BUT SINCE CANCER IS THE DISCUSSION I THINK ITS IMPORTANT TO SHARE HOW I FIND IT HARD TO EXPLAIN TO MY 5 YEAR OLD WHY I HAVE TO LEAVE HER FOR 2 WEEKS TO SEEK SPECIALIZED TREATMENT OUT OF THE COUNTRY.’

In the video, Anjlee tries to explain to her daughter that she has to go for treatment and thuse travel. But her baby is distraught with the news of being away from her mother.

Anjlee insists, asking her to repeat why she has to leave. Her  daughter tearfully says,

‘BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO GET IN A MACHINE THAT HAS TO CHECK IF YOU’RE ALRIGHT OR NOT.’

THEY EMBRACE AS ANJLEE RESPONDS, ‘I’M GOING TO MISS YOU.’

But her daughter isn’t done yet.

She advises her mother to seek treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, suggestions that Anjlee has to lovingly decline and explain why.

She said,

‘AGA KHAN HAS THOSE MACHINES BUT MY DOCTOR IS IN INDIA AND HE KNOWS HOW TO CHECK MY CHEST BETTER, SO FAR I’M DOING BETTER, I DON’T NEED OXYGEN ALL THE TIME, I DON’T NEED TO NEBULIZE ALL THE TIME.

AGA KHAN HOSPITAL DOES NOT HAVE THOSE MACHINES THAT CAN TREAT YOUR MOMMA.

THE DOCTORS IN INDIA KNOW MORE ABOUT MOMMA’S CHEST AND THEY ARE GOING TO HELP YOUR MOMMA BE BETTER AND STRONGER.’

Gadhvi was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2013, but went public about it in 2015 after funds raised by family and friends got drained.

After she appealed for public help, Kenyans donated over Ksh6 million in hours.

All About Liver Cancer

Hepatocellular carcinoma was the type of liver that late K24 news anchor Anjlee Gadhvi battled with.

Liver cancer begins in the cells of the liver.

Some of the symptoms include; Losing weight, appetite loss, abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, Abdominal swelling, discoloration of your skin and white stool.

Diabetes, Aflatoxins, excessive alcohol are some of the factors that increase the chances of getting this killer disease.

According to the Mayo Clinic, factors that increase the risk of primary liver cancer include:

  • Chronic infection with HBV or HCV. Chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) increases your risk of liver cancer.
  • Cirrhosis. This progressive and irreversible condition causes scar tissue to form in your liver and increases your chances of developing liver cancer.
  • Certain inherited liver diseases. Liver diseases that can increase the risk of liver cancer include hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease.
  • Diabetes. People with this blood sugar disorder have a greater risk of liver cancer than those who don’t have diabetes.
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. An accumulation of fat in the liver increases the risk of liver cancer.
  • Exposure to aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are poisons produced by molds that grow on crops that are stored poorly. Crops, such as grains and nuts, can become contaminated with aflatoxins, which can end up in foods made of these products.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption. Consuming more than a moderate amount of alcohol daily over many years can lead to irreversible liver damage and increase your risk of liver cancer.

Gadhvi passed away on 10th January 2020 – at 13:15 while undergoing treatment at the Aga Khan hospital.
