A lot can happen in weeks, months or even a year. As we come to the close of 2023, the Star has compiled celebrity breakups that shook the country this year.
While many such breakups were unexpected, it is also good to remind everyone that just like everyone else, these celebrities are human and have their faults.
In Kenya, many of your favourite celebrity couples, married or just dating saw their relationship fail the test of continuity.
Here is a list:
Kate Actress and Phil Karanja
While these two had been married for about six years and had created a lovely family together, news of their separation took many by surprise. They announced their separation in a jointly signed statement.
“We concluded to end our marriage a long while ago and are separated. We sincerely request everyone to honour our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” they said.
Phil responded by saying they remain friends and business partners going forward.
“Hii ni mambo ya watu wawili but allow us to add you to the group chat kidogo so we can proceed with our lives bila story mob. Kate Actress and I remain as friends, co-parents and business partners,” he said.
Vera Sidika and Brown Mauzo
Socialite Vera Sidika Mung’asia and singer Brown Mauzo announced their split on August 30 after being together for about three years. The two met in August 2020 and soon after got married.
In 2021, they announced that they were expecting their first child together. Early this year, they welcomed their second child before parting ways.
During their marriage, the two had in several instances teased their fans that they had parted ways.
However, in April and later on August 30, Brown Mauzo posted a statement saying that they had parted ways mutually.
Vera later confirmed their separation saying that the statement from Mauzo was a joint statement from the both of them.
Jackie Matubia and Blessing Lung’aho
The two are actors and they graced our screens through various local programs. The last one in which they featured saw them take their relationship further into fiancées in real life.
The two had a child together in the two years they were a couple before Matubia announced that they had parted ways and she was now a single mother of two.
She announced their separation in July 2023.
Bridget Shighadi and Nick Mutuma
After months of speculation that the two, once seen as a Kenyan power couple had separated after many years of being together and raising a beautiful daughter, the rumours came to pass.
Their separation was confirmed by Shighadi in a question-and-answer session on Instagram with her fans.
Willy Paul and Miss P
Singer Willy Paul and Miss P broke up just a month after reuniting. On July 4, he said he was a heartbroken man, before saying he was back in the market for a new girlfriend. Willy Paul encouraged ladies to shoot their shots revealing that he was ready and time was running out.
“Ladies, since Miss P and myself are no longer together, I highly encourage you to shoot your shot now. The list is long. Remember, time waits for no lady.”
Georgina Njenga and Tyler Mbaya
The young content creator couple announced that they had parted ways a few months after the birth of their first child.
The announcement first came as a surprise to many of their followers as Georgina was the first to make it public during an interactive session with her followers.
She went ahead and said she was already in another relationship at the time of the announcement. She later clarified that their separation was mutual.
Lupita Nyong’o and Selema Masekela
US-based Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o broke up with her 52-year-old boyfriend Selema Masekela, the son of the late South African jazz composer Hugh Masekela, after almost a year of dating.
She took to her Instagram page in October to make the announcement, noting that she no longer trusts Selema.
“There are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering. At this moment, I must share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust,” Lupita said.
“I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception.”
Akothee and Omosh
Singer Esther Akoth popularly known as Akothee also parted ways with her newly wedded husband while they were enjoying their honeymoon.
According to Akothee, she discovered things she could not keep up with about the man she had just gotten married to in a star studded affair and chose to walk away from the union.
Avril and J Blessing
Video director J Blessing and his baby mama and singer Avril parted ways last month after she accused him of domestic violence.
J Blessing acknowledged that it’s true they had an altercation in public but it did not involve violence.
The two have been together for over seven years and are blessed with a son.
After the announcement, Avril urged her social media followers to forgive J Blessing, adding that she had since forgiven the celebrated video producer.
Nicah The Queen and DJ Slahver
Gospel singer Nicah The Queen has announced that she has broken up from her fiance DJ Slahver.
In her message, Nicah said she and Slahver split amicably.
“After so much consideration, Slahver and I have decided to go our separate ways. Thank you so much for the love you all accorded us. Tunawapenda,” she announced.
