Akothee Reveals Why She Left the SDA Church to Become a Non-Churchgoer

Singer Esther Akoth, famously known as Akothee, has admitted to abandoning the Seventh-day Adventist Church after her marriage broke up nearly two decades ago.

The mother of five opened up about this while discussing the journey she went through before achieving success in life.

She shared an old photo showing her performing at a club in Malindi in 2006 and talked about how she let loose after her marriage ended.

“You say when I grow up, I want to be like Akothee. Have you tasted Esther Akoth Kokeyo’s journey before she became the Akothee you admire?,” Akothee wrote.

She added, “When my marriage broke up, I threw away the Seventh-day Adventist Church and joined the world. Now I am back in church 🤣🤣🤣🤣🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏.”

Akothee’s marriage to the father of her elder daughters, Mr. Jared Otieno, was officially dissolved on May 22, 2011, after a divorce case was filed in 2007. This came after the two had been in a legal marriage for about five years.

In an interview last year, the 43-year-old musician hinted that her marriage to Mr. Jared hit a dead end after he fell in love with another woman.

After separating from Mr. Jared, the singer headed to Mombasa with intentions to find means of livelihood.

“I always wanted to be a taxi driver. I didn’t have the papers to go knock on someone’s door, I only had Form 4 certificates. (Mr. Jared) refused my papers and my ID. When I went to Mombasa, I couldn’t get any job, even being a waiter requires an ID,” Akothee recounted.

It was during her time in Mombasa that she reunited with the father of her fourth child, with whom she had her first son, Prince Ojwang.

In 2022, Akothee confirmed that her marriage to Mr. Jared Otieno was officially dissolved on May 22, 2011, after a divorce case was filed in 2007.

“This divorce decree was filed in 2007, Absolute Nisi Order. Therefore, this marriage was dissolved on May 22, 2011, by the High Court,” she said.
