AMREF Flying Doctors today marked a significant milestone in our journey of healing and resilience with the launch of the “Wings of Courage” maiden mission flight, the first operation since the tragic aircraft accident of 7 August 2025 in Mwihoko, Kiambu County, which claimed the lives of four crew members and two members of the local community.

While operations have resumed, the organisation continues to mourn the loss of Captain Muthuka Munuve, Captain Brian Kimani Miaro, Dr Charles Mugo Njoroge, and Nurse Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula, along with two Mwihoko residents, is felt deeply in Amref Health Africa at large. We remain steadfast in supporting the bereaved families with emotional, logistical, and practical assistance during this difficult time.

The “Wings of Courage” flight serves as both a tribute to their memory and a continuation of the life-saving work they cherished. The mission, from Nairobi to Belgium, transported a critically injured patient following a severe road accident in Zanzibar. The patient’s family, desperate to secure urgent treatment back home, turned to AMREF Flying Doctors as their beacon of hope – and we answered.

“This flight is more than a mission — it is a message. A message that courage endures, that service continues, and that the legacy of our fallen heroes lives on in every life we save. We fly not just with wings, but with purpose.” Said Steve Gitau, CEO, AMREF Flying Doctors.

 Community Support: Active engagement with the Mwihoko community, including psychosocial support, relief assistance, and a continued presence and sustained presence to help address trauma and disruption.

 Victim Identification: In collaboration with government agencies and forensic experts, the organisation is ensuring accurate and respectful identification of the victims.
