LG Electronics East Africa and KFHI hand over your wo transformational community projects

LG Electronics (LG) East Africa, in collaboration with Korea Food for the Hungry International (KFHI), handed over two completed projects for the winning proposals in the LG Ambassador Challenge.

The Challenge invited applicants to submit their Impactful proposals to the community, with the opportunity to win KSh1 million for each of the two selected projects. These funds are intended to help transform these initiatives into sustainable solutions for local communities.

The first winner was the Decipe Children’s Home, which provides food and shelter for orphaned and abandoned children, as well as those from very poor families. The orphanage used the award monies to refurbish and expand its living spaces by upgrading bedrooms with sturdy new beds, increased its water storage capacity by building a larger water tower, and completed a solar system project to power components of its operations.

“We are genuinely happy to have received this award from LG, which helped us upgrade our facility, ensuring that each child that we host truly has the feeling of home,” said Felistar Wangui, the Director at Decipe.

The second awardee was Rebirth of a Queen, a survivor-led, community-based organization. Their work focuses on supporting survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and human trafficking, by helping them find their voices through storytelling, education, training, and protection. The organization used its grant to expand its Fashion & Design training program by acquiring new sewing equipment and materials to increase class capacity and boost the production of handcrafted clothing.

“We have always required better equipment to enhance our training programs and we are glad to report that the prize winnings from the LG Ambassador Challenge helped us acquire it. Many of our trainees will benefit and we know they will create an even bigger impact in the community,” said Pauline Akinyi, the Founder at Rebirth of a Queen.

Now in its 6th year, the 2025 challenge focused on projects that align with the following three United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: No Poverty (SDG 1), Quality Education (SDG 4), and Climate Action (SDG 13). The application process included a four-month review, where applicants were required to submit detailed project plans and expense estimates, ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of the awarded funds by the winners.

“The winning projects this year showed great innovation, compassion, and community impact, making them very deserving of support through the LG community fund,” said LG East Africa’s Head of Marketing, Jane Kariuki.

KFHI, LG’s partner in the challenge, will over the course of one year, review the activities at the winning projects through regular check-ins, including site visits, video calls, and SMS communication with the project teams.

Chun Jong Hu, the Director of KFHI, noted: “It is important that the winning projects get the hands-on support needed to ensure their success and sustainability. We will be closely following them to ensure that they achieve their intended impact.”

The LG Ambassador Challenge is an important component of LG Electronics East Africa’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Through this challenge, the company continues to invest in local solutions that contribute to the development of resilient communities. Since its inception, LG East Africa has awarded KSh13 million in prize winnings to recipients who have used the funds to create lasting, positive changes in their communities.

In addition to the LG Ambassador Challenge, LG East Africa runs a variety of other CSR initiatives, including some that are focused on environmental protection, and education.  The company has been involved in providing critical infrastructure such as electronics and boreholes to hospitals, schools, and other community institutions, helping to improve the region’s overall well-being.
