Zedekiah Lukoye: Mtumba Trader Who Rose to Dress Hollywood Heavyweights

Zedekiah Lukoye, also known as Zeddy Loky, is the founder and CEO of Narok NYC, a luxury brand situated in New York City, USA, and recognized for its high-end suits.

Speaking in an interview, he disclosed that he had not always been interested in fashion, but had developed a taste for it from his mother’s acquaintances who sold second-hand clothes in his neighborhood and he began selling to his friends while he was in sixth grade.

“Growing up, there was a flea market right outside my school that I’d pass every day. Sometimes I stopped by the different stalls. My mother had many friends who sold secondhand clothes, and it occurred to me that I could also make money selling clothes to my fellow students,” he stated.

Loky went on to say that when he finally moved from Eldoret to Nairobi, he encountered a group of young Kinoo residents who made and sold jeans.

He joined the crew and learned how to tailor before starting his own firm, Blackbird Jeans.

Loky sold a single pair of jeans for Ksh 500, but as his abilities improved, the price went to Ksh 2000 per pair as local celebrities visited his shop to request his services.

The designer saud while he was garnering a lot of attention, he was given the opportunity to present his designs at the Blankets and Wine festival in 2011, where one of the celebrities he had dressed recommended him to a New York-based fashion buyer.

“She was very impressed. A couple of weeks later, she called to ask me if I had a passport. I did. She told me she wanted me to attend the New York Fashion Week. I kept waiting for someone to wake me up from the dream. I couldn’t believe it,” he recounted.

Loky went on to say that after his visit in 2011, he returned for New York Fashion Week in 2012.

He then secured an internship with Alexander Nash, a fashion giant that hired him soon after his internship was completed.

Loky also worked with another prominent brand, 3X1, which he eventually purchased in 2015, before founding Narok NYC in 2013, which he stated hit its pinnacle in business in 2016.

Some of the top clientele that Loky boasts of having worked with include Ronald Karauri, Lupita Nyong’o’s youngest Peter Junior Nyongo, Bradley Theodore, Dion Saap, Damian Escobar and Rohan Marley.
