Why ODM cancels nominations in Nairobi county

Orange party has called off  its primaries in Nairobi county set to take place on April 25 after angry youths stormed the warehouse where ballot papers had been kept.

The party director of communications Philip Etale has told their supporters that this was due to unavoidable prevailing circumstances.

“Youths stormed the warehouse on Monday night complaining that the process would not be free and fair,” Etale said.

Etale further added that a new date shall be communicated later in the day.

“Due to unavoidable circumstances, the National Elections Board of the ODM party has called off party primaries scheduled for Nairobi County today Tuesday 25th April 2017. A new date will be announced later in the day”, he said.

“It is very unfortunate because the board had made sure that everything was on. It is our wish that we finish this exercise as soon as possible, we shall hold the nominations before the end of the week ” Etale said.

“Whoever will be found culpable will face the actions of the party,” he added.

Political parties have been conducting their primaries to nominate party candiadates for the August polls.Yesterday,Jubilee party pushed its nominations to April 26 since most polling stations had been booked by the rival Orange party.

Electoral commission IEBC had given parties until April 27 to conduct their nominations.However following an application filed by NGO Angaza Empowerment Network,a Malindi court extended deadline for party primaries to May 1.
