January will continue being a hard month for Kenyans even as they strive to navigate through Kenya’s tough economy after the government hiked electricity prices.

On Friday, January 10, through the Kenya Gazette, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced that it had increased fuel energy cost charge.

It also adjusted foreign exchange fluctuation and had increased the water resource management authority levy.

“Notice is given that all prices for electrical energy will be liable to a fuel energy cost charge of plus 250 Kenya cents per kWh (Kilowatts per hour), a foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment of plus 0.82 Kenya cents per kWh for all meter readings to be taken in January 2020.

“Notice is given that all prices for electrical energy will be liable to a Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) levy of plus 2.22 Kenya cents per kWh for all meter readings to be taken in January 2020,” the Kenya Gazette Notice Volume CXXII-No.4 read.

This increase in electricity prices may have been triggered by the rise in fuel prices over the past years.

In 2020, fuel prices are expected to soar higher following the escalating tensions between the US and Iran, an oil-producing company.
