We got to the moon 50 years ago, but no matter how developed the world is today, here on Earth some mysteries still stump even the most expert scientists. They are the remains of past civilizations that, to this day, continue to befuddle archaeologists, historians, physicists, and chemists. Get ready for an unusual historical tour.
We has found some of the most talked-about stories that could potentially change the way we understand the past.
1. What’s below the sphinx’s ear?
A rock blocking a hole right below the Sphinx’s ear in Egypt is in plain sight. What is it guarding? What’s hidden behind it?
Archeologists are still trying to figure this out, but a Russian man claims that it hides something revolutionary. He insists that he lived on Mars as a soldier in a previous life and visited Egypt during this time, where he found out that something hidden below the Sphinx’s ear was meant to be discovered and that it would bring big changes to Planet Earth.
The story may sound like a fantasy but there’s no point in denying that there’s something below the Sphinx’s right ear. And additionally, there’s a drawing from the 19th century showing people coming out from the top of the monument’s head, which would be a second entrance inside the Sphinx.
Archeologists say that there’s no way to get inside the Sphinx since every time they’ve tried to make their way in, it has either been blocked or flooded. Looks like we’ll need to wait a little bit more before we find out.
2. An ancient “CD-ROM” no one can decipher
It’s called the “Phaistos Disk” and can be dated back to the Minoan Civilization in Greece some 3,700 years back. It’s a disk that’s 16 cm in diameter and it’s made out of clay that contains information stored in the form of engraved figures. Scientists have agreed it should be read spirally, but still have many questions to ask regarding the language.
It’s still unknown, even though people have been trying to understand it and trace it for years. However, a group of experts recently claimed that words related to “motherhood” and “goddess” appeared on the disk and believed that the object is engraved with a prayer to a Minoan goddess. There’s still much to be understood.
3. The Turkish meat-eating tombs
These Turkish sarcophagi, located on the ancient city of Assos, have an unusual ability: They are able to consume and disintegrate corpses so quickly that the phenomenon still baffles experts to this day. The tombs, which are known as Çanakkaleare, can be as old as 2,700 years, and are able to decompose a body in just 40 days, compared to the 50 to 200 years that it would usually take any other type of burial.
Scientists believe that the significant amounts of aluminum in the tombs burn and consume flesh easily, but this is just one theory that has yet to be proven.
4. Cocaine and tobacco in Egyptian mummies that suggest they contacted America
When the mummy of Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses the Great was analyzed, scientists discovered traces of tobacco, coca, and hashish trapped in the mummy’s intestines. Soon after, other mummies were examined and the findings were the same.
Because all of these plants are native to the American continent, the discovery has been hard to swallow for many experts since it would dramatically change what we knew about history. Did Egyptians discover America? Some believe the Vikings did, others are sure the Chinese were the first to set foot on the continent, but with these findings, more doubts have been raised.
5. These inexplicable perfectly spherical stones from Costa Rica
They are known as “Las Bolas” which means “The Balls” and their history takes us 15 centuries back. Archeologists agree the spheres were produced by the Diquis culture, a civilization that went extinct before the Spanish conquest.
They range from 10 to 257 cm in diameter and weigh more than 16 tons. The balls were forged and scattered through Costa Rica over a thousand year period and although scientists know who made them, their purpose and reason for their placement are still unclear.
6. The manuscript written in an unbreakable code
The Voynich Manuscript is a book from the 16th century that scientists believe was written in Italy during the Renaissance. The puzzle is, no one can understand what is written on the pages. It has been written in codes that not even World War I and World War II codebreakers have been able to decipher. The manuscript was named after Wilfrid Voynich, a polish book trader that found it and bought it in 1912.
7. The Stones of Puma Punku
Puma Punku means “the door of the puma” in Aymara, and it’s the name given to an American complex located in Bolivia. It was built by the people of the Tiwanaku culture, a civilization that predated the Incas.
What’s interesting about the complex is that the structures are made out of big cut stones joined together, but people didn’t have the technology to cut such big rocks back then. Also, they didn’t use any wheels. The wheel was an invention taken to South America with the Spanish Conquest, so how did they move these gigantic rocks?
8. An ancient treasure map that could make anyone rich
What you see in this picture is a copper scroll found in a cave from the Dead Sea that is believed to lead to ancient Jewish treasures. The scroll is a treasure map that guides people to religious and precious metal treasures. Some experts are sure it leads to the treasure of the Jewish Second Temple, that fell in the year 70 A.C.
People have been able to decipher many parts of the map, but since it’s so precise in its indications, like “turn left at the water fountain,” it’s impossible to find the treasure since those exact places are either long lost or covered by sand.
