The government plans to raze many of the informal settlements in the coming months which are built on ground that is unstable because of rain wash or because they are too close to the ocean's edge. Meanwhile, there is no plan to resettle the displaced. HFH Cote d'Ivoire has planned a pilot program in another urban slum in the next fiscal year to show what kind of work can be done to help the housing situation of similar populations. Kenya is home to 47 million people living in different parts of the county and urban centers are highly populated. In Kenya, most major cities have slums.

Nairobi’s Kibra constituency has several slums from Soweto, Raila to Mathare, there are many advantages people here have compared to their counterparts who reside in estates.

It’s easy to get cheap labor such as getting someone to clean for you, cook for you and even make your hair. Here, one can offer labor for as low as Ksh50, unlike estates where you part with more than Ksh500 per task done.

Affordable lifestyle

Living communally

People in the slums live together as a family and help each other. For example when you’re out of food, water or anything you can easily borrow from one another.

Accessibility to services

From hospitals, shops, tailors, salons, public means to many more. It’s easier to find this in a slum compared to estates. Most estates don’t allow other businesses within their space and things like hawking are prohibited. The transport system in slums is 24 hours unlike in residential areas where you need a private car or have to hire a taxi to navigate.

Security is good

With the introduction of Nyumba Kumi initiative, people living here are their neighbor’s keepers and rarely do they have cases of insecurity. Also it’s rare to hear about theft, robbery and mugging cases because when found, one is lynched.

Fresh food

People in slums have accessibility to fresh food. Most butcheries, mama mboga, mtura sellers buy food that is sold within a day unlike in estates where meat and food stay longer before that stock is cleared.

Most people in the slums don’t refrigerate or sell stale food, everything is fresh.
