There is a particular hour on the Peponi corridor, early in the morning before the city wakes, when the loudest sound is the quiet. Birdsong carries down the tree-lined roads, the air stays cool and still, and the calm holds even on a weekday. tKarura Forest sits close by, and a little of its green canopy seems to drift down the street with it. It is one of the few addresses in Nairobi where a person can stand outside their front door and hear birds before anything elseAura Peponi sits inside the established residential neighbourhood of Peponi, General Mathenge and Spring Valley, a setting of quiet roads and settled homes, close to international schools, embassies, the Westlands commercial district, and the UN Blue Zone.

Canaan Developers looked at this setting and decided to build homes that match its stillness. Aura Peponi offers one- and two-bedroom duplexes built across two levels, with living spaces on the ground floor and bedrooms upstairs, reached through an internal staircase. Sizes begin at 676 square feet.

Inside these duplexes, the peace of the neighbourhood comes indoors. The living room rises through two storeys, and the glass rises with it, so natural light comes in high and travels deep into the room. Depending on the side of the building, the window frames the green of the forest or the quiet residential neighbourhood, and either way the room feels open, calm and unhurried. A staircase lifts out of the floor toward the bedrooms, creating a change in level that works well. Yohhanes Kidane, the Head of Business at Canaan Developers, explains that the buyers they designed for were clear about their goals. They refused to compromise on location and wanted the finish of a proper home to return to after a long day.

    What two floors buy you

A duplex lets a home serve more than one purpose without any of them crowding the others. Downstairs is the living side of the home: the double-height living room, the kitchen opening into it with designer-grade finishes, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that runs the full height, drawing light inward and framing the greenery and the skyline. Upstairs, the bedrooms are tucked away from the social area, so rest and company each have a level of their own.

That suits the way people live now, whether they work from home, keep irregular hours or host visitors. Kidane says the whole project grew from one idea: “When we were building, we had a live, work, eat, play, shop paradigm in mind.” The duplex is where that thinking begins. The staircase acts as a visual feature rather than a simple service tool, and because the living areas have double heights, the main room gains a dimension that flat square footage cannot capture.

“A room you can look up into feels completely different from one with a flat ceiling, even when the square footage is identical,” Kidane says. “That is the secret of the format. We are not selling just space. We are selling space that behaves differently and enhances the experience of a duplex.”

The building as an extension of the home

Well-designed homes succeed when the building around them supports daily life, and Aura Peponi is planned around this idea. The rooftop holds a heated swimming pool with a panoramic glass edge, a fully fitted gym, landscaped terraces, a residents lounge, a media lounge, and outdoor seating. Down at street level, a boutique retail row provides cafes, health and beauty services, a mini-market, and everyday conveniences. A resident can meet a friend for coffee or pick up a prescription without ever starting a car. It is the same live, work, eat, play, shop thinking, carried from the home into the building: if the gym is upstairs, the coffee is downstairs, and the office is ten minutes away, a person buys back hours of their day. The building also includes the technical infrastructure required for comfortable living, such as borehole water, a backup generator, high-speed lifts, internet connectivity, video intercom, an electric fence, and manned security at the entrance.

    Who is buying

Canaan targets two groups at the same time: owner-occupants who want this specific address and investors buying for tenants who want the exact same thing. Released as a limited collection, the project keeps its resident count low, so the calm of the neighbourhood carries into the building. For these buyers, Aura Peponi ticks every box: the location, the quiet, the finish and the privacy. They choose a home that is better built and better arranged, in a neighbourhood they do not need to leave. Building this way means fewer, more distinctive units and longer conversations with every buyer, and the result is less a development than an address worth coming home to.
