NAIROBI, Kenya, July 10, 2026. Kenya has joined other countries worldwide in celebrating World Population Day 2026. The national events emphasize the need to invest in young people as a foundation for sustainable development.

The National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) organized this commemoration under the global theme, “Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people today and for the future.” The high-level forum includes government officials, development partners, civil society groups, academics, and youth representatives. They are discussing policies and initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing and opportunities for Kenya’s young population.

Dr. Masini Ichwara, Director General at the State Department for Economic Planning, is the Chief Guest at the event. Other attendees include Hon. Ali Wario, Chairman of the NCPD Board; Ms. Lucy Kimondo, Acting Director General of NCPD; and Mr. Innocent Modisaotsile, Officer-in-Charge and Head of Country Office at UNFPA Kenya, along with representatives from various national and international organizations.

The forum aims to enhance collaboration among stakeholders on population and development issues, ensuring that young people are central to national planning. Discussions focus on improving access to quality education, healthcare, skills development, employment, and social protection so young people can reach their goals.

Organizers pointed out that Kenya’s youthful population offers great potential for economic growth and innovation if adequate investments are made in human capital. Participants are also looking for strategies to promote inclusive development, protect the rights of young people, and create a supportive environment where everyone can contribute to the country’s progress.
