The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has urged Kenyans to uphold justice, democracy, and responsible leadership, drawing inspiration from Micah 6:8 during its Nyanza Regional Electoral and Governance Forum held on November 4-5, 2025, at Friends Church in Kisumu. The gathering included officials and delegates from member churches across Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira counties.
In its statement, the NCCK expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga. It described him as a notable political leader and a tireless advocate for democracy and human rights. The council offered condolences to his widow, Mama Ida Odinga, and his family, urging Kenyans to continue Raila’s legacy of justice and national unity.
The NCCK also mourned the lives lost in recent landslides and weather-related disasters across Elgeyo Marakwet and other areas. It praised first responders and called on county governments to invest in effective disaster prevention and mitigation strategies.
A cry for justice: NCCK statement on the state of the nation
Raising concerns over increasing poverty and unemployment, the council condemned government policies that are harming the business environment and worsening citizens’ welfare. It reminded political leaders to avoid early campaigns and hate speech, urging the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the Registrar of Political Parties to take firm action against violators.
Additionally, the NCCK demanded urgent action to tackle the rising threat of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. It called on the Ministry of Health to finalize regulations on marketing unhealthy foods.
In conclusion, the council reminded Kenyans that justice, mercy, and faithfulness are the foundations of a prosperous nation. It wished all citizens a blessed, Christ-centered Christmas and a peaceful New Year in 2026.
