Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has picked Vivo MD Polycarp Igathe as his running mate.

Before his tenure at Vivo Energy, Mr Igathe worked at consumer goods firm Haco Industries as its regional MD for East Africa.

Sonko running mate served as the chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers until 2014 when Pradeep Paunrana, the current CEO of Athi River Mining, took over.

Mr Igathe also had a stint at Coca-Cola – where he worked until 2000 – before joining internet service provider AfricaOnline and later Kenya Breweries Limited.

Sonko defeated former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth and Wanjiru in the nominations. He got 138,185 votes while Kenneth and Wanjiru got 62,504 and 7,654 respectively.

Sonko had released a list of nine potential candidates for the position. They included former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, Dennis Waweru, Millicent Omanga, Jimnah Mbaru, John Gakuo, James Kiyapi and Janet Ouko.

The duo will now face off with the incumbent Governor Evans Kidero in the upcoming August General Elections.
