Police officers in Kericho County are investigating the death of a 19-year-old who was found dead in the corridor of her family’s residence.
The student is reported to have hanged herself following allegations that she was dumped by her boyfriend.
However, officers who arrived at the scene noted that investigations are ongoing to establish the motive as no suicide note was found.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the student, who was nine months pregnant, was heartbroken following the breakup.
The deceased’s body was discovered in the morning by her mother, who woke up early due to Easter family celebrations.
The mother’s cry of distress alerted other family members and neighbors, who rushed to the scene and attempted to rescue the student. Unfortunately, she had already passed away.
The neighbors reported the matter to Kericho Police Station, and officers rushed to the scene.
The student’s body was transferred to Kericho Referral Hospital Mortuary.
This incident highlights the worrying situation among students who end up taking their lives due to relationship issues.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the suicide rate among men in Kenya is four times that of women in the past two decades.
The main factors leading to the rise in these cases include depression, mental illness, broken relationships, economic hardships, and loneliness, among others.
Human rights advocates have called for mental wellness programs to be introduced in public institutions such as universities to curb the rise in cases among the youth.
