Fairtrade calls for collaboration between farmers, exporters and Government to horticultural producers

Fairtrade International, the World’s most recognized and trusted sustainability label, has called for more collaborations between farmers, exporters and government to help horticultural producers compete in the world’s export market.

“When producers are viewed as partners, we recognize that our destinies are intertwined. The success of businesses is intricately linked to the success of producers. We depend on each other for growth and prosperity. This mutual interdependence underscores the need for collaboration, trust, and the development of solid, long-lasting relationships.” SANDRA UWERA, GLOBAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CFO) – FAIRTRADE INTERNATIONAL.

In line with the Kenyan government’s ambition to grow exports as a share of GDP to 25% by 2025, concerted efforts have been needed to improve the quality and safety of Kenya’s agricultural products in line with global standards to expand access to international markets. The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) has welcomed this move, adding that the collaborations and globally competitive products will ensure the balance of trade gap is closed.

“Being transparent and accountable in our operations in a way that aligns with ethical principles and values is important as it builds trust with our customers, partners, and the community. We must embrace responsible and sustainable practices as a core business strategy as the way forward. The journey towards creating a fair and sustainable future is a shared responsibility; let us seek partnerships with organizations and stakeholders who share this vision,”

Dr Erick Rutto, President, Kenya National Chambers of Commerce & Industry – Kenya.

Farmers, too, have welcomed the move, adding that Kenya’s cash crop stands a better chance in the global markets once global standards are adhered to.

“Creating a fair future requires the support and commitment of consumers, businesses, and policymakers alike. Each purchase of a Fairtrade-certified product, every partnership with ethical companies, and every policy that supports fair trade practices is a step toward a brighter future for farmers and their families – and for all of us.”

– Patrick Kimemia, Chairman – Makomboki Tea Factory.
