Why Clinical officers will go on strike this weekend

Clinical officers in Kenyan public hospitals will go on strike this Sunday.

The COs will be striking over what the have termed as discrimination in awarding of higher salaries.

Kenya Union of Clinical Officers Chairman Peterson Wachira said on Tuesday that Clinical officers in the country will down their tools if the government doesn’t call them to the negotiating table by Sunday.

“The government promised to call us to the negotiating table but that has not happened. We suspended the strike for 45 days which will elapse on January 22,” he said.

Some clinical officers, he said, have stagnated in their career, are never promoted despite proof of qualifications.

Mr Gibore also accused the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) of failing to address the clinical officers’ job evaluation.

“We have members who are nine years due for promotion but none is forthcoming. We also have officers with the same qualifications, same job group but paid differently, why?” said Kenya Union of Clinical Officers secretary-general George Gibore a few weeks ago.

“There is clear favouritism from the ministry considering that it has always been headed by doctors.”

Mr. Wachira added that they will not issue a strike notice as they had already done so last year.
