Vihiga Queens Confident Of Cruising Through CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers Final

Kenya representatives in the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers Vihiga Queens have shifted their focus to the semi-finals after suffering their first defeat in the hands of Jeshi La Kujenga Taifa (JKT) Queens on Saturday in Kampala.

The four-time Kenya Women Premier League Champions have had a good run in the tournament, winning their first two group matches before suffering a 1-0 defeat to JKT Queens after going down to ten players in their last group match.

Despite their loss, Charles Okere’s side has already booked their slot in the semis which are scheduled for August 27.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Okere said he is optimistic his side will win their next match even though they are yet to know their opponents in the semis.

“I am happy with how we have approached this tournament so far. My girls have been so determined and I believe they will do wonders in the semis.

“We were handed our first red card of the tournament in our previous match something I believe derailed our morale with winning the match against JKT. We will, however, come back strong in the semis and I urge my charges to stay focused,” Okere said.

JKT topped group B with 9 points after attaining a 100% record while Vihiga came in second in the group with six points. Vihiga will now face the first runners-up from group A who will play their final group matches in the week.

It is the second time Vihiga are reaching the semis of this competition having done so in 2021 where they went ahead to win the maiden championship.

They are now seeking their second qualification into the Women’s CAF Champions League after playing in the inaugural edition held in Egypt in 2021.

If Vihiga sails through the finals and emerges the victors in the championship, they will represent the CECAFA region in the final tournament that will be held later this year in Ivory Coast.
