Kipyegon’s Double Dream Alive As She Leads Kenyan Quartet Into 5,000m Final

Faith Kipyegon’s quest to bag a double at the World Athletics Championships is taking shape as she stormed to the women’s 5000m final on Wednesday night.

Just a day after bagging gold in the women’s 1500m, Kipyegon renewed rivalry with Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands in the second semi-final over the 5000m.

It was a close finish between the pair as the world record holder finished second in 14:32.31 behind Hassan who clocked 14:32.29 with another Kenyan Lilian Kasait finishing fifth to also qualify for the final.

In another semi-final contest, Commonwealth Games champion Beatrice Chebet triumphed in 14:57.70 ahead of defending champion Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia who placed second in 14:57.72 as Margaret Chelimo came home third in 15:00.10 to also seal a slot in the final.

The women’s 5000m final will be held on Saturday.

Kenya will be hoping to add her medal tally at the championship later tonight with the men’s 1500m final lined up for 10.15pm where Abel Kipsang and Reynold Cheruiyot will fly the Kenyan flag.
