Lionesses in pain as Spain win their first-ever World Cup title!

Spain are the champions of the world! In a thrilling battle in Sydney on Sunday morning (Nairobi time), the Spaniards defeated England thanks to Carmona’s first-half winner.

Just like their male colleagues in 2010, the girls from the Iberian peninsula reached their first-ever World Cup trophy thanks to a 1-0 victory.

The role of ‘Iniesta’ – who scored Spain’s only goal in the mentioned WC final – was occupied by Carmona, who scored her only third international goal, but her second in successive, larger-than-life games.

It was her winner against Sweden that saw her side into the final, and she has had her say again in Sydney.

The decisive moment of the match was triggered by a lost ball for England in the midfield, with Abelleira picking it up and finding Carmona on the left-hand side. She then fired a perfect shot past Earps for a 1-0 lead, and the eventual trophy.

Despite that shock, England recovered quite quickly, with Hemp getting so close to equalizing. Daly slotted the ball into Hemp‘s feet, and she curled a superb strike goalwards – but it smacked the top of the crossbar before going wide.

Goalkeeper Earps made several stunning saves, including one in the second half from the penalty spot to deny Jenni Hermoso.

But it was one step too far for the European champions, who lost just their second match in two years under coach Sarina Wiegman.
