Just in: AFC Leopards’ multi-million Betika Sponsorship deal under threat as financial crises deepens

AFC Leopards has once again finds itself embroiled in a dispute with its commercial director, Vincent Enos Mutokah, over a sponsorship deal with sports betting company Betika.

Mutokah, through his lawyers, has demanded payment of Sh5.5 million in commission for successfully securing a Sh60 million shirt-sponsorship agreement with Betika.

According to Mutokah, despite Betika having already paid the first quarter of the sponsorship amount to the club, he claims to have received only Sh500,000 from AFC Leopards.

Dissatisfied with the discrepancy, Mutokah’s lawyers have sent a letter to the club, stipulating a 10-day period for payment of the outstanding commission, along with accrued interest.

Failure to comply may result in Mutokah pursuing legal action as per their agreement.

“Our client is a member and loyal fan of the AFC Leopards Sports Club (the club) and has actively supported it over time using his time and resources. This is well within your knowledge and indeed a matter of general public notoriety,” the letter said.

“In the years 2020 and 2021, the club was expecting substantial financial turbulence due to a lack of sponsors and well wishers to fund it and its activities. This is also a fact well within the public domain and your knowledge.

“It was a term of the contract that our client would render the overall sponsorship transaction services including inter alia.”

The letter also highlights Mutokah’s contributions to AFC Leopards as a loyal fan and member, stating that he has actively supported the club both financially and through personal involvement.

“In recognition of our client’s competence and capacity to mobilize funds and other resources needed by the club, it appointed him as his commercial director under the terms of the contract mutually executed by the parties and dated 2nd February 2021 to undertake the process of securing a suitable sponsor for the club within the given and available parameters.

“It was a term of the contract that our client would render the overall sponsorship transaction services including inter alia.”

The partnership deal with Betika, announced in 2021, was seen as a beacon of hope for the club’s financial stability and growth.
