IEBC commissioners agree to quit

Electoral commissioners have formally agreed to leave office on a negotiated settlement if the offer is made.

Led by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Issack Hassan, the officials said they want a dignified exit from office.

“If there is a political settlement to be raised, the commissioners will not be a stumbling block,” said Mr Hassan.

“That is on behalf of all the commissioners,” he added before all the eight other commissioners agreed with him.

“We have served the country with honour and we appreciate the good work of this committee,” said commissioner Lillian Mahiri-Zaja.

The details of their exit will be worked out by the 14-member team on electoral reforms that ended its public hearings on Wednesday.

The team is also expected to propose changes to the laws on elections.

“Thank you for sacrificing for this country so that we can have a free and fair election in 2017,” said Senator Kiraitu Murungi, the panel’s co-chairman.
