In a move that has been integrated as an attack on Sportspesa, Members of Parliament have formed a committee to investigate the current growth of betting and the general gambling industry in Kenya.

The 11-member team is expected to table a report on its findings and recommendations on how to regulate the gambling industry in 14 days.

The move comes shortly after Sportspesa announced that it had entered into multi-million sponsorship deals with English Premier League clubs Hull City and Southampton.

However, in a statement to Newsday, Sportspesa explained that the deals will see local football benefit from the expertise and development of the UK based clubs.

The committee will be co-chaired by Majority Leader Aden Duale and Deputy Minority Leader Jakoyo Midiwo. According to Midiwo, the industry is vulnerable to tax evasion and money laundering.

Other members of the committee are Samuel Chepkonga (Ainabkoi), Thomas Mwadeghu (Wundanyi), Samuel Gichigi (Kipipiri), Benjamin Langat (Ainamoi) and Kanini Kega (Kieni).
