Kabarnet Boys students burn down Sh. 180 million dorms

A fire gutted down Kabarnet Boys High School in Baringo destroying property worth Sh. 180 million. Strikingly, this was the third time that secondary school was being closed this term, with students having just come from a suspension after attempting to burn it down.

The fire erupted at around 7pm on Wednesday when students were preparing to take their evening studies. There are also allegations that they were angered by the school plan to expel some 300 students who failed to attain grade C+ (plus) cut mark in their end of term one exams.

Form one and form four students were in school at the time the fire broke out while form three and two’s were intended to resume on Thursday. Some reports indicated that the learners were protesting poor management of the school headed by Richard Mambili.

The dormitory was constructed one year ago by retired President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi as a token from a former teacher and board chairman. Baringo county police commander Peter Ndungu said police were deployed to guard the school overnight to restrain the students from committing further destruction.
